The sun shines on homes for sale in Bernal Heights, literally. On the southeast side of town,  it is one of the sunniest San Francisco neighborhoods with less marine layer fog than most and especially Twin Peaks .

Bernal Heights Summit (a.k.a Bernal Hill) is the large bald hill that peeks above the rooftops of Bernal Heights homes. Bernal Hill is one of the many folded hills of San Francisco, which were created by the ‘wrinkling’ of the earth when the tectonic plates converged nearly 150 million years ago. Today, neighborhood residents love it not only for the amazing 360º panoramic views of the city – the Golden Gate Bridge, the bay, San Bruno Mountain and downtown skyline – but also, for providing a natural refuge amid a bustling city environment.

Bernal Heights Park consists of 26 acres of preserved grasslands surrounding the hilltop and is filled with things to do; running trails, off-leash dog areas, and hiking paths. You may even catch a glimpse of a coyote, red-tailed hawk or California alligator-lizard, all of which call this neighborhood park home.

Development of most homes for sale in Bernal Heights didn’t begin until after the earthquake of 1906, primarily small Victorian and Edwardian structures. While mostly residential, business in Bernal is anchored along Cortland Ave. and Mission Street.  Refinery 29 has created an amazing short list (and walking map!) of where to shop, what to do and where to eat, check it out in The Ultimate Guide to Bernal Heights.

Alemany Farmers’ Market comes to life every Saturday morning and has every week since August 4th, 1947. Just around the bend from the market is the Alemany Community Garden pictured here.

For those who have cars, commute or just want to easy access to the freeways, Bernal Heights is a desired neighborhood because it is the crossroads of  the 101 (Bayshore Freeway) and the 280 (Southern Freeway).
Bernal Heights was voted to be the No. 1 “Hottest Neighborhood” in 2014 based on web searches and properties that were most often favored. There’s a lot to love about Bernal Heights, but hey – the Jackson Fuller  team has known that for more than a decade!
