San Francisco, CA, August 3, 2015 – Beverly Shwert from Zephyr Real Estate’s Marin office began her term as President of the San Rafael Harbor Rotary Club on July 1, 2015. To launch her term, she attended the 106th Rotary International Convention in Sao Paolo, Brazil, in June, along with 15,000 other people from 150 countries and regions.
“I was amazed to hear from people all over the world about the good work they do, as part of Rotary Club, to make the world a better place,” commented Shwert. “We are 1.2 million neighbors, friends, and community leaders who come together to create positive, lasting change in our communities and around the world.”
Keynote speaker for the convention was Dr. Hamid Jafari, who was one of the driving forces behind the eradication of polio in India. Jafari, a medical officer from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, worked in concert with the World Health Organization from 2007 to 2012. During that time, India’s cases of polio dropped from hundreds each year when he took the job to zero in 2011. After a three-year certification period, India was officially declared polio-free in 2014.
The International Convention provides an opportunity for club members to connect with other like-minded Rotarians on many levels, from cultural and culinary expressions to music and sports interests. Friendships are encouraged and fostered, and part of that experience is the House of Friendship. More than 75 Rotary Fellowships have booths where common interests can be shared including a World Choir for the Convention Ecumenical Service.
Past convention locations include England, Australia, Singapore, Argentina, Canada, Portugal and Denmark. Next year’s convention will be in Seoul, Korea.
Shwert’s Club, the San Rafael Harbor Rotary Club, is a smaller club that focuses primarily on the Canal area of San Rafael. Each year the Club hosts several community service projects to help the people in that area.
Rotary International is a service organization whose goal is to connect business and professional leaders to provide altruistic services and build goodwill and peace in the world. It is open to all people with over 34,000 clubs and 1.2 million members globally.
