If your regularly dialed phone numbers suddenly don’t connect come February 21st, don’t panic! It’s just the local phone system going through some growing pains.

See, the venerable 415 area code is nearly out of available numbers so, to keep up with the large number of residents moving into the region the California PUC decided to add a secondary area code: the 628. But with two area codes overlapping on the same geographic region, users will have to dial the area code regardless of who they’re calling. That means even if you’ve got a 415 number and your buddy’s got a 415 number, you will still have to dial the full 10-digit phone number to connect–same as if you were dialing long distance or dialing between 415 and 628 phone numbers. So make sure your phone’s address book and speed dial are in order before next Saturday!
